Virtual Propulsion Engineer-3D Combustion, Airflow, Exhaust (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid in Pontiac or Warren, Michigan, with office attendance at least three times per week.

What you will do

• Design and optimize gasoline and diesel combustion chamber geometries for efficiency, power output, and emissions performance.
• Run and interpret high-fidelity 3D CFD simulations covering combustion, heat transfer, cold starts, catalyst heating, fuel preparation, mixture motion, and wall wetting.
• Model fuel injector behavior, spray atomization, spray-wall interaction, mixture preparation, and in-cylinder combustion using CONVERGE, STAR-CD, AVL-Fire, or equivalent tools.
• Provide component- and system-level design recommendations to design responsible engineers and collaborate with engine design, calibration, controls, emissions, and test teams.
• Improve analysis methods and automation, validate simulation results against experimental data, and support first-time-capable laboratory procedures.
• Document and present analysis objectives, assumptions, results, and conclusions to engineering peers, management, and technical stakeholders.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of compressible CFD analysis experience with powertrain-related systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field focused on internal combustion engines or fluid dynamics.
• At least 3 years of experience using CFD software for gasoline or diesel mixture-preparation and combustion simulation.
• Advanced proficiency with CFD meshing tools such as ProStar, ICEM, HyperMesh, or TGrid, and with CONVERGE, Siemens CCM+ In-Cylinder Solution, STAR-CD, AVL Fire, or equivalent software.
• Advanced proficiency with CFD post-processing tools such as Ensight or ProStar.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
• Programming experience with Java, MATLAB, or Python, including workflow automation and tool customization.
• Experience applying machine learning and data-driven modeling to engine simulations.
• Experience with GT-Power, WAVE, AVL Boost, or equivalent 1D engine simulation software.
• Experience with engine testing, data acquisition, and calibration tools such as AVL Concerto, Indicom, or ETAS.
