TL;DR
Propulsion Engineer (Spacecraft): Designing, integrating, testing, and operating propulsion systems for spacecraft and lunar landers with an accent on component sizing, fluid-thermal modeling, and propulsion hardware specifications. Focus on performing trade studies, supporting cleanroom assembly and test operations, and providing real-time mission operations support.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA, United States; occasional project travel may require on-site stays of up to one week. Relocation assistance is provided for qualified candidates moving to Pittsburgh.

What you will do

  • Design, integrate, test, and operate propulsion systems for spacecraft and lunar landers.
  • Size tanks, valves, instrumentation, engines, and pressurization components.
  • Perform propulsion system fluid-thermal trade studies and apply modeling results to design and operations.
  • Create component specifications, support vendor interactions, and contribute to procurement.
  • Support spacecraft assembly in the cleanroom and propulsion component testing.
  • Train in mission operations procedures and provide real-time mission operations support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or a similar engineering discipline with 2 years of experience, or a master’s degree with related experience.
  • Experience with propulsion component design, specification, analysis, manufacturing, integration, or testing.
  • Strong understanding of thermal-fluid engineering and experience creating or applying tools for hardware design and performance prediction.
  • Familiarity with system-level fluid and thermal modeling tools such as GFSSP, Amesim, or Thermal Desktop.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, including technical reports and presentations.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and eligible to obtain required export authorizations for ITAR/EAR compliance.

Nice to have

  • Experience with hypergolic propulsion systems, propulsion architecture, components, and suppliers.
  • Scientific programming experience with Python, C/C++, Matlab, or Fortran.
  • Experience with CFD tools such as Ansys FLUENT or CFX.
  • CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks, and familiarity with lifecycle management tools.
  • Experience with space or lunar systems and spacecraft cleanliness standards.
