Staff Engineer - User Experience (Backend): Lead design and modernization of patient-facing backend services, APIs, and orchestration for secure health platform interactions with an accent on event-driven architecture, scalability, and regulated data handling. Strong preference for candidates based in Vancouver, BC able to work hybrid. Open to remote candidates across Canada.
Base salary: $180,000–$210,000 in local currency, depending on experience and location.

What you will do
- Lead design and modernization of patient-facing backend services using API-first and event-driven patterns.
- Drive API best practices, define contracts, and implement orchestration with BFF patterns.
- Build event-driven workflows using AWS EventBridge, SQS/SNS, and async processing.
- Improve reliability, observability, and fault tolerance for email, SMS, and notification pipelines.
- Design secure systems for sensitive patient data with authentication/authorization and regulated compliance.
- Mentor engineers, conduct design reviews, and collaborate with Product, Security, QA, and Frontend teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years backend engineering in platform or high-scale distributed systems.
- Strong Python (FastAPI, Flask) and modern backend frameworks.
- Deep AWS event-driven expertise (EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Lambda, ECS).
- Async task processing (Celery), REST/GraphQL APIs at scale, microservices.
- Observable systems (Datadog), secure auth (OAuth2, JWT), databases (Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis).
- IaC (Terraform/CDK), CI/CD, regulated environments (HIPAA, PHI/PII).
- Excellent technical communication and influence in ambiguity.
