Staff Engineer - User Experience (Backend)

Location: Hybrid in Vancouver, British Columbia, with remote work available across Canada. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada and must not require current or future employer visa sponsorship.

Base salary: CAD 180,000–210,000 annually, depending on experience and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead the design and modernization of patient-facing backend services and distributed systems.
• Drive API-first architecture, including REST or GraphQL APIs, BFF, orchestration patterns, and service contracts.
• Design event-driven workflows using AWS EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Lambda, ECS, and asynchronous messaging.
• Improve reliability, observability, fault tolerance, and security across email, SMS, and notification pipelines.
• Design systems that protect sensitive patient and identity data in regulated environments.
• Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and influence architecture in collaboration with Product, Architecture, Security, QA, Clinical, and Frontend teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience, including platform or high-scale distributed systems.
• Strong experience with Python and modern backend frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask.
• Deep experience with event-driven AWS architecture, asynchronous task processing, microservices, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience governing REST and/or GraphQL APIs, designing observable systems, and implementing metrics, tracing, and alerting.
• Experience with OAuth2, JWT, service-to-service security, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis, Terraform or CDK, and mature CI/CD practices.
• Experience handling sensitive data in regulated environments, such as HIPAA, PHI, or PII, plus strong technical communication and architectural influence.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling email delivery, SMS gateway, or notification orchestration platforms.
• Familiarity with BFF patterns for React or modern frontend applications.
• Experience with contract testing frameworks such as Pact.
• Startup-to-scale-up experience and familiarity with healthcare, HIPAA, ISO 27001, or ISO 13485 environments.
