Staff Software Engineer (Python/Next.js)

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid

Salary: $192,000–$288,000 annually, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the design and delivery of backend-heavy, device-adjacent systems supporting connected device experiences, clinical workflows, and operational tools.
• Own technical initiatives from problem framing through implementation across Python services, Next.js applications, APIs, and device, mobile, and backend integrations.
• Drive architecture and technical decisions for scalable systems spanning device control, mobile clients, backend services, and telemetry flows.
• Partner with Product, Clinical, Regulatory, Hardware Engineering, Data, Design, and Quality stakeholders to turn ambiguous requirements into execution plans.
• Improve backend quality, observability, testability, operational excellence, and release confidence.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, implementation guidance, debugging, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems.
• Strong backend engineering experience with API design, scalable services, and microservice-oriented architectures.
• Strong production experience with Python and modern web applications using Next.js and TypeScript.
• Experience connecting backend services with mobile or web clients and device-adjacent software.
• Experience with AWS, Docker, Postgres, Redis, GraphQL, and related backend tooling.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture, cross-functional collaboration, production debugging, reliability improvements, and mentoring.

Nice to have

• Experience with connected devices, BLE flows, device control, or firmware and hardware collaboration.
• Experience in healthcare, medical devices, HIPAA, FDA-regulated products, or other quality-sensitive domains.
• Experience with React Native or mobile application development.
• Experience building internal tools, developer productivity workflows, simulation layers, or test infrastructure.
• Experience defining scope and guiding execution in high-ambiguity, multi-team environments.
