Product Counsel (Insurance)

Location: Fully remote within AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, KS, KY, MA, ME, MD, MI, MS, MN, MO, NV, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OK, PA, TN, TX, or VA; remote/hybrid setting may apply depending on company policy. Standard business hours with occasional extended hours, flexibility for collaboration across time zones, and occasional travel of up to 10–15% to company offices, vendor sites, or industry conferences.

Salary: $160,000–$190,000 annually, plus bonus eligibility.

What you will do

• Advise product, underwriting, and business teams on product development, strategy, insurance regulation, and compliance.
• Develop and draft policy language, coverage enhancements, endorsements, and contracts for non-standard personal private auto programs across several states.
• Monitor insurance department bulletins, legislation, industry developments, and regulatory guidance; analyze and distribute relevant information.
• Identify, assess, and resolve regulatory and compliance risks, and lead implementation of changes required by regulators and insurance industry authorities.
• Review underwriting guidelines, product-related marketing materials, regulatory policies, procedures, and compliance programs.
• Coordinate with product development teams on state-specific requirements, product filings, regulatory questions, legal opinions, and memoranda.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 7–10 years of legal experience in personal automobile products.
• Strong understanding of personal auto insurance products and state regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
• Robust analytical ability, sound and mature legal judgment, pragmatic problem-solving skills, flexibility, and the ability to make decisions under ambiguity and imperfect information.
• Self-directed, solution-focused approach, strong work ethic, business acumen, and ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
• Strong attention to detail and organization, with the ability to prioritize and complete time-sensitive projects.
• Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external colleagues, explain complex or sensitive information clearly, and contribute collaboratively to a high-performing team.

Nice to have

• California bar admission is strongly preferred.
• In-house experience with an auto insurance carrier is strongly preferred.
