Senior Director, Engineering, Avalara Tax Research (AI)

What you will do

• Lead engineering teams through a multi-year transformation of a flagship SaaS product.
• Replatform legacy components and build modern, scalable infrastructure.
• Integrate AI into the product to deliver customer-facing AI-powered experiences.
• Own the technical roadmap and align it with business objectives, customer needs, and scalability goals.
• Advise executive leadership on AI integration, technical investment, and product growth strategy.
• Build an operating model that improves engineering speed, quality, automation, scalability, and business impact.

Requirements

• Proven success managing engineering organizations supporting $50M+ product lines or similarly scaled SaaS platforms.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science.
• Strong engineering foundation with the ability to understand, build, and scale complex systems.
• Expertise in platform modernization, replatforming, scalability, and microservices.
• Strong understanding of AI-driven product development and practical AI adoption in engineering workflows.
• Demonstrated experience building and mentoring high-performing teams and delivering complex platform transformations.
