Director of Engineering (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Charlotte, NC, United States; in-office Tuesday–Thursday and remote Monday and Friday. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $200,000–$250,000 base pay per year.

What you will do

• Lead a multi-team engineering organization responsible for consumer-facing products and platforms.
• Set technical direction across architecture, code quality, testing, observability, reliability, and delivery.
• Drive AI capabilities for personalization, recommendations, assisted and conversational journeys, and intelligent automation.
• Build scalable AI platform capabilities, including model and LLM integrations, retrieval and context pipelines, evaluation harnesses, guardrails, observability, and cost controls.
• Own the logged-in customer experience, partner integrations, and end-to-end product recommendation experience.
• Hire, coach, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers while representing engineering in executive planning and prioritization.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading managers or multiple teams.
• Experience owning consumer-facing product areas with accountability for delivery and technical health.
• Strong architectural judgment across distributed systems, APIs, and modern cloud environments.
• Experience architecting and scaling integrations with external systems, partner platforms, or data feeds.
• Production experience shipping AI or ML capabilities, including integration, evaluation, guardrails, and monitoring.
• Experience driving AI-assisted development tooling and agentic workflows within an engineering organization.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, lending, insurance, or two-sided marketplace products.
• Experience leading product engineering and platform or infrastructure teams.
• Familiarity with RAG, evaluation, prompt and context engineering, microservices, event-driven architecture, and CI/CD at scale.
• Experience with AI governance, security, quality standards, or regulated environments such as PCI or GLBA.
