Senior Backend Software Engineer (GM Energy)

TL;DR

Senior Backend Software Engineer (GM Energy): Design and build scalable, reliable backend services and APIs powering home energy management, bidirectional charging (V2H/V2G), and utility integrations with an accent on data ecosystem, telemetry, and operational excellence. Focus on owning production services, leading complex cross-service flows, ensuring uptime and reliability through monitoring, incident response, and robust deployment practices.

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan – expected to report to office at least 3 times a week. GM does not provide immigration sponsorship (H1-B, OPT, etc.). Relocation benefits may be eligible.

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end design and implementation of complex backend features, services, and RESTful APIs surfacing energy and telemetry data to apps and partners.
• Integrate with data platforms like Snowflake or Databricks, contribute to data models, pipelines, and ensure data quality and observability.
• Define versioned APIs, schemas, service contracts with backward compatibility, error handling, and automated testing.
• Build secure deployment pipelines with rollout strategies and align to reliability goals including on-call, incident triage, and post-incident improvements.
• Mentor engineers on operational practices and influence technical direction across teams for APIs, integrations, security, and observability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s in CS or equivalent + 6+ years backend experience.
• Hands-on with backend languages (Python, Java), RESTful APIs (auth, versioning, error handling) on cloud (Azure preferred).
• Experience with distributed systems/microservices, CI/CD, automated testing, observability (Datadog, Prometheus), on-call, incident response.
• Worked with SRE/platform teams on reliability, scalability, cost efficiency.

Nice to have

• Energy/utilities/EV/IoT experience.
• Event-driven architectures (Kafka), streaming pipelines, SQL on data platforms.
