Principal Software Engineer, Backend (TypeScript/Python)

Location: Must permanently reside in the United States full-time. Remote available, or hybrid (3 days/week in-office) for candidates in the San Francisco area.

Salary: $162,000 – $258,750 + equity

What you will do

• Lead architecture and design of high-scale, low-latency backend applications core to the member experience.
• Define long-term technical strategies and implementation paths for complex distributed systems.
• Develop high-quality, performant code primarily using TypeScript and Python.
• Collaborate with PMs, EMs, and stakeholders to align technical vision with business goals.
• Author technical specs and RFCs to guide critical design decisions across the company.
• Mentor and elevate engineers while driving operational excellence and system reliability.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building production-grade APIs and distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in system design and software architecture for scalable components.
• Extensive experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and Python.
• Strong hands-on experience with unit/integration testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Must permanently reside in the United States full-time.
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills to influence technical direction.

Nice to have

• BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes) and modern DevOps.
• Deep knowledge of relational and NoSQL database design and query optimization.
• Experience designing Server-Driven UI (SDUI) systems for dynamic rendering.
