TL;DR
Senior Backend Engineer (Kotlin/Java): Developing and scaling a Payroll product using a microservices architecture with an accent on end-to-end feature ownership and technical design. Location: Must reside in one of the authorized US states (CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA). Hybrid options available for the NY metro area; otherwise, remote within the EST time zone.
Salary: $170,000 - $220,000 per year

What you will do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems for the Payroll product using a modern microservices architecture.
- Own the full development cycle from technical design and coding to deployment and monitoring.
- Collaborate with product managers and frontend engineers to implement new features and align with the product roadmap.
- Build and optimize APIs to ensure seamless integrations across the platform.
- Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in Kotlin, Scala, or Java.
- Participate in code reviews and utilize automated QA processes in a continuous delivery environment.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend development.
- Proficiency in Kotlin, Java, or Scala.
- Experience owning features end-to-end and navigating technical trade-offs and negotiations.
- Strong knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- Expertise in software design and scalable architecture.
- Experience with AWS or equivalent cloud platforms and testing methodologies (TDD, unit-testing).

- Experience developing payroll, payments, or HR products.
