WASH Assistant - National Position

TL;DR

WASH Assistant (National Position): Implement field-level institutional and community WASH interventions in Nyakabande Transit Centre with an accent on ensuring access to safe water, improved sanitation, and optimal hygiene practices. Focus on community mobilization, behavior change communication, sanitation campaigns, and promoting ownership for sustainability among refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.

Location: Nyakabande Transit Centre, Kisoro, Uganda. Must be a Ugandan National.

What you will do

• Ensure access to clean and safe water at transit centre, refugee, and host communities under Senior WASH Officer guidance.
• Apply behavior change communication approaches to mobilize communities and institutions on best WASH practices.
• Assess WASH needs with persons of concern, refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities to devise effective strategies.
• Lead sanitation campaigns including latrine construction, desludging, drainage management, and ending open defecation.
• Promote hygiene practices and distribute WASH materials while facilitating community involvement for project ownership and sustainability.
• Coordinate with partners to avoid duplication, integrate WASH with other sectors, and participate in inter-agency discussions.
• Develop weekly/monthly/quarterly reports, contribute to monitoring/evaluation, document change stories and learnings.

Requirements

• Must be a Ugandan National.
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, Community Health, Water Engineering or similar.
• Minimum 3 years professional experience in WASH programs in humanitarian contexts, preferably with INGOs.
• Experience implementing WASH or public health activities.
• Strong facilitation, community mobilization, and communication skills.
• Good computer skills for technical reports; strong organizational abilities.
• WASH technical expertise in water supply, sanitation, hygiene promotion; adaptability, cultural sensitivity.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of WASH social behavior change approaches like CLTS, CHAST, MHM, PHAST.
