Bioinformatics Team Manager

Location: Remote (Canada), must be eligible to work in Canada. Option to work in person from Toronto office.

Salary: $100,000 to $150,000

What you will do

• Lead a small senior team with commitment to individual growth, development conversations, and career building.
• Shape the bioinformatics function's future and define its roadmap in partnership with product and engineering leadership.
• Build credibility with senior leadership by communicating direction, risks, tradeoffs, and justifying staffing/investments.
• Improve project prioritization, scoping, tracking, and documentation for sustainability and transparency.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, and design to deliver integrated solutions informed by bioinformatics.
• Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and team scaling; stay current on tools, standards, and datasets.

Requirements

• 3+ years managing technical teams, including career development, team dynamics, and accountability.
• Ability to communicate bioinformatics priorities to technical/non-technical leadership and build trust.
• Strong understanding of genomics/bioinformatics for scientific discussions and technical direction.
• Experience with core tools/data (BAM, VCF, FASTQ; samtools, bcftools) and pipelines (WDL, Nextflow, Snakemake, CWL).
• Knowledge of programming (Python, R) for reviewing work, guiding decisions, and debugging.
• Familiarity with cloud/HPC and reproducibility practices; strategic mindset for prioritization and scoping.
• 5+ years hands-on bioinformatics, expertise in NGS analysis and production pipelines.
• Graduate degree (Master’s/PhD) in bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, or equivalent.

Nice to have

• Experience in startup/early-stage company.
• Statistical and visualization skills for -omics datasets.
• Experience with biological databases, data integration, public datasets (gnomAD, TCGA, ENCODE).
• Familiarity with FAIR data principles and genomics standards.
