Mechanical Engineer (Defense)

TL;DR

Mechanical Engineer (Defense): Designing and deploying mechanical systems for rapid testing and scalable production of avionics and weapon subsystems with an accent on environmental test fixtures and production tooling. Focus on creating high-fidelity HITL/VITL support hardware, performing structural and thermal analyses, and optimizing design for manufacturability (DFM).

Location: Must be a U.S. citizen and based in the USA (ability to obtain security clearance required).

What you will do

• Own end-to-end design of mechanical fixtures for vibration, shock, and thermal cycling.
• Develop HALT/HASS profiles and fixtures to validate reliability margins and expose product weaknesses.
• Create test racks, interface chassis, and fixtures for avionics systems.
• Optimize production tooling and assembly workflows to improve throughput and repeatability.
• Perform structural, thermal, and tolerance analyses to validate fixture performance.
• Collaborate with machine shops and vendors to iterate designs quickly.

Requirements

• 2-5+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in test, tooling, or hardware development.
• Proficiency with CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent.
• Experience designing for vibration, shock, and thermal environments.
• Solid understanding of structural mechanics, material properties, and GD&T.
• U.S. citizenship is required as the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance is mandatory.

Nice to have

• Experience in aerospace, missile systems, spaceflight, or defense.
• Hands-on experience with HALT/HASS methodologies and reliability engineering.
• Proficiency with FEA tools for structural and thermal analysis (e.g., ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus).
• Knowledge of environmental standards such as MIL-STD-810 or MIL-STD-1540.
• Ability to rapidly prototype using CNC, additive manufacturing, or sheet metal.
