Senior BESS Product Safety Engineer

Location: Louisville, Colorado, United States; approximately 30% travel across the U.S., with potential international travel

Salary: $113,000–$141,525 per year, plus annual bonus

What you will do

• Apply NFPA, IFC, UL, and IEC standards throughout BESS product development.
• Review mechanical drawings, layouts, CAD models, and mechanization diagrams.
• Own safety-critical BESS enclosure requirements and oversee prototypes, factory acceptance testing, and design qualification.
• Provide technical oversight for UL 9540/9540A testing, fire and explosion modeling, plume analysis, and gas dispersion studies.
• Develop fire code compliance matrices, permitting documentation, emergency response materials, and technical data packages.
• Coordinate with AHJs, third-party engineers, certification bodies, internal teams, customers, and first responders; mentor junior engineers and contribute to industry standards work.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, fire protection, or related engineering.
• 5–7 years of experience in mechanical design and fire protection for energy, industrial, or safety-critical systems.
• Strong knowledge of UL 9540/9540A, NFPA 68/69, NFPA 72, NFPA 855, and NFPA 110/111.
• Experience supporting permitting, testing, and regulatory approval processes.
• Proficiency with mechanical CAD and safety modeling tools, such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or fire protection engineering.
• Utility-scale BESS experience and direct work with AHJs or third-party fire engineers.
• Participation in NFPA, UL, IEEE, or other standards organizations.
• Experience with FLACS, Ansys, FDS, or similar fire modeling tools.
