TL;DR

Experimental Physicist II (Fluxonium Development): Develop scalable fluxonium-based gate-model quantum processors with an accent on superconducting qubit characterization, high-fidelity gate calibration, and error mitigation techniques. Focus on coherence and noise measurements, benchmarking protocols, diagnosing scaling limitations, and supporting error correction demonstrations.

Location: Burnaby, Canada

Salary: 100,000 - 150,000 CAD per year (Burnaby)

Company

Leader in development and delivery of quantum computing systems, software, and services; world's first commercial supplier of quantum computers building both annealing and gate-model processors.

What you will do

  • Develop and run experiments, analysis routines, and quantitative models to characterize superconducting fluxonium qubits.
  • Perform coherence and noise characterization (T1, T2, Ramsey, echo, noise spectroscopy) to identify decoherence mechanisms and recommend improvements.
  • Develop, calibrate, and validate high-fidelity single and two-qubit gates, reset, and readout using standard benchmarking protocols.
  • Apply error mitigation techniques and diagnose scaling limitations in control, calibration, readout, and noise.
  • Collaborate with designers on device parameter studies, simulations, and measurement primitives for improved processor performance.
  • Share results through documentation and contribute to Lisp software infrastructure for qubit and processor modeling, calibration, and operation.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.Sc. in quantum computing or related experimental field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with measurement and control of qubits using microwave techniques or related quantum control methods.
  • Strong critical thinking, technical problem-solving, and independent research skills.
  • Strong software development for experimental automation, data acquisition, and analysis; willingness to learn new tools.
  • Collaborative mindset, excellent communication skills, and ability to adapt to shifting priorities.

Nice to have

  • Background in superconducting devices, gate-model processor development, device fabrication, RF engineering, or low-noise electronics.
  • Experience calibrating and characterizing fluxonium qubits.
  • Familiarity with architecture design for low crosstalk and scalable two-qubit coupling.
  • Expertise in cryogenic microwave engineering and troubleshooting RF setups.
  • Knowledge of superconducting qubit fabrication techniques.
  • Experience with version control and collaborative software development.

Culture & Benefits

  • Company ownership, competitive pay, equity, bonus, and meaningful benefits.
  • Diverse team of domain experts and motivated graduates fostering innovation and career growth.
  • Emphasis on ambitious goals, straight talk, empathy, accountability, and team motivation.
  • Equal employment opportunity regardless of protected characteristics.
