TL;DR
Principal System Architect (MedDevice) (cloud, distributed systems, medical devices): Defining and governing architecture across on-device firmware, cloud services, analytics platforms, data pipelines, AI/ML platforms, and clinical applications with an accent on security, scalability, resilience, interoperability, and regulatory compliance. Focus on designing system decomposition, API strategies, data models, cloud architectures, and end-to-end workflows across medical device and digital ecosystems.

Location: Remote - US

Salary: $198,000–$258,000 per year

What you will do

  • Define the multiyear architecture strategy for cloud, application, data, integration, and ML/AI infrastructure.
  • Establish architectural principles, reference architectures, and governance processes for reliable, secure, scalable, and compliant systems.
  • Guide systems decomposition, API strategies, data models, cloud architectures, and major technical design decisions.
  • Bridge on-device and off-device systems across device interactions, clinical workflows, data flows, and system integrity.
  • Provide architectural oversight throughout the SDLC and investigate complex issues involving scalability, reliability, data, and workflows.
  • Mentor engineering leads and architects while advising senior stakeholders across product, security, quality, regulatory, clinical, and data science functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive software engineering or architecture experience.
  • Deep expertise in large-scale distributed systems, cloud architectures, and modern application platforms.
  • Experience architecting regulated or high-reliability systems, preferably in medical or health technology.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices, event-driven systems, data pipelines, observability, DevOps/SRE practices, and cloud-native technologies.
  • Ability to influence executive and cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.

Nice to have

  • Experience with FDA, EU MDR, IEC 62304, HIPAA, and related medical software regulations.
  • Experience with AI/ML platform architecture, model deployment, and clinical decision support software.
  • Experience integrating medical devices, clinical systems, EHRs, FHIR, or HL7.
  • Leadership experience in organizations scaling complex multi-product software ecosystems.
