Principal Legal Counsel (Policy & Advocacy)

Location: Seattle, WA; the role involves moderate international travel. Unrestricted work authorization in the United States is required. Immigration-related sponsorship is not provided.

Salary: $293,600–$455,200 USD for Seattle and Washington, D.C. locations.

What you will do

• Advise Global Policy & Advocacy, Communications, regional offices, and affiliated entities on legal and compliance matters.
• Serve as a legal relationship manager for grantmaking, government engagement, and public-facing campaign teams.
• Provide guidance on lobbying, electioneering, public relations, communications, reputational risk, and nonprofit governance.
• Structure and negotiate advocacy grants, campaigns, media agreements, partnerships, and intellectual property matters.
• Lead responses to complex legal, regulatory, and reputational issues and provide business-oriented solutions.
• Deliver legal education and training while monitoring domestic and foreign legal developments.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree and current bar membership in good standing.
• At least 10 years of legal practice experience.
• Deep expertise in U.S. tax-exempt organizations, political advocacy, communications law, and nonprofit governance.
• Strong drafting, negotiation, advisory, strategic-thinking, business, and judgment skills in complex or high-risk environments.
• Experience supporting demanding clients and leading legal responses to regulatory or reputational crises.
• Unrestricted U.S. work authorization is required; visa or immigration sponsorship is not available.
