Staff Software Engineer - Embedded (IoT)

Location: Tysons, Virginia, United States; employees work from the office 4 days a week

Base salary: $150,000–$180,000 USD annually

What you will do

• Lead technical decision-making across teams and build consensus around architectural trade-offs.
• Analyze and architect large C++ codebases for embedded use cases, including memory allocation and modularity decisions.
• Implement state machines, event-driven designs, and publish/subscribe models across shared codebases.
• Design cross-platform software supporting multiple hardware variants and product SKUs.
• Create technical design documents, architecture decision records, and system-level specifications.
• Identify systemic risks and technical debt while coordinating long-term remediation with product, hardware, and engineering stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on native or embedded systems and large C++ codebases.
• Expertise in modern C++, constrained-device optimization, bare-metal and RTOS environments, cross-compilation, and build systems.
• Strong knowledge of Linux systems, threading, processes, asynchronous and messaging-based designs, IP networking, kernels, device drivers, and bootloaders.
• Experience with IoT wireless protocols such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, Zigbee, Z-Wave, 802.15.4, LoRa, or cellular technologies.
• Proficiency with Git and CI/CD pipelines adapted for embedded environments, plus strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a related technical field.
• Experience with glibc, musl, bionic, Android/AOSP, embedded open-source projects, or formal Agile/Scrum processes for hardware-dependent teams.
• Knowledge of security standards and protocols, video pipelines, image signal processing, or streaming protocols.
• Experience with AI-aided design and software architecture.
