Embedded Software Engineer (Linux/PCIe)

Location: Milpitas, California, United States; onsite role.

Base pay: $136,300–$199,900 annually.

What you will do

• Design, develop, deploy, and maintain embedded software and firmware for semiconductor reticle inspection and machine-control systems.
• Build quasi-real-time C/C++ applications for image capture, high-speed data acquisition, image processing, and hardware interaction on real-time Linux or VxWorks.
• Develop and debug Linux kernel drivers and user-space components for custom hardware, including PCIe enumeration, DMA, interrupts, memory-mapped I/O, and performance tuning.
• Translate system requirements into user-space and kernel-space designs and troubleshoot issues across hardware, kernel, and application layers.
• Collaborate with mechanical, systems, electrical, optics, algorithms, and applications teams from concept through production and field troubleshooting.
• Lead design reviews, testing, documentation, performance analysis, CI/CD, code reviews, and architectural planning.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of embedded software development experience in an industrial or product-focused environment.
• Strong C/C++ skills and solid software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, design patterns, and testable architecture.
• Strong experience with Linux or RTOS environments, multithreading, synchronization, embedded architecture, and Linux kernel concepts.
• Hands-on Linux kernel driver development and debugging, including device-tree or ACPI exposure and strong PCIe knowledge covering configuration space, BARs, MSI/MSI-X, DMA, and link characteristics.
• Experience with serial communication, RS-232, Ethernet, EtherCAT, TCP/IP sockets, software debugging, troubleshooting, and cross-functional technical communication.

Nice to have

• Laboratory experience with electrical, mechanical, and optical measurement instruments.
• Semiconductor fab operations or manufacturing technology experience.
• Linux administration and debugging tools such as perf, ftrace, trace-cmd, and gdb, plus UML or similar modeling methods.
• Experience with high-speed I/O subsystems, PCIe endpoints or switches, DMA engines, IOMMU concepts, and throughput or latency diagnosis.
• Python or another scripting language, first-principles systems thinking, and project planning skills.
