Engineering Manager (Distributed Systems)

Location: Remote within listed US states; remote technical positions in Canada are limited to Ontario. hirify.global also has offices in Chicago, Illinois and St. Petersburg, Florida.

Salary: $140,000–$190,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead and develop a high-performing full-stack engineering team.
• Act as a hands-on player-coach by contributing production code and setting technical direction.
• Drive roadmap initiatives from concept through production with predictable, high-quality execution.
• Guide the transition from monolithic systems to modular, distributed services with clear ownership boundaries.
• Champion API-first and schema-first development using OpenAPI/Swagger, contract testing, and interface-driven design.
• Establish practices for observability, resilience, distributed communication, and reliable system performance.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of hands-on software development experience and strong computer science fundamentals.
• Experience managing or leading engineering teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated success as a player-coach who contributes meaningfully to the codebase.
• Experience building distributed systems and decomposing monoliths into modular services.
• Hands-on experience with API-first and schema-first workflows, relational and NoSQL databases, message brokers, and distributed system design patterns.
• Ability to live and work full-time in one of the eligible US states, or in Ontario for remote technical positions based in Canada. hirify.global is currently unable to sponsor employment visas.

Nice to have

• Experience with React, Angular, or Vue.
• Familiarity with Looker or BigTable.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks.
• Exposure to insurance or financial services.
