Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, based in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle, United States

Salary: $146,000–$240,000 base compensation in San Francisco and New York City; $132,000–$216,000 in other US locations, plus equity.

Writer develops an enterprise AI platform for building and deploying AI agents powered by company data and enterprise-grade large language models.

What you will do

• Design and deliver secure, scalable AI integration platforms connecting enterprise systems and powering mission-critical automation.
• Design the AI integration client ecosystem for connecting applications with external tools, data sources, and enterprise systems.
• Own backend services and high-throughput, low-latency APIs for agent workflows and cross-system orchestration.
• Define identity, authentication, and trust boundaries across OAuth, API key, and service-to-service integrations.
• Partner with product and engineering leaders on roadmap, technical strategy, and platform capabilities.
• Drive production reliability through SLOs, SLAs, observability, incident readiness, resilience, performance optimization, architecture reviews, testing, and mentorship.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production backend systems with TypeScript, Deno, Node, or Bun.
• Experience designing API-driven platform services and distributed systems, including microservices, event-driven architecture, and secure service-to-service communication.
• Practical experience building AI integration layers such as MCP clients or servers, tool orchestration, external API connectors, and authentication mediation.
• Hands-on knowledge of OAuth2/OIDC, API keys, token lifecycles, secret management, and least-privilege access.
• Cloud-native experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and production operations.
• Experience with observability, reliability engineering, service metrics, SLOs/SLAs, alerting, incident response, performance tuning, and mentoring engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with Python ecosystems and data systems such as PostgreSQL.
