Software Development Manager

Location: Initially fully remote within South Africa, with relocation to Cape Town required by Q3 2027 upon the opening of the hub.

What you will do

• Set, monitor, and evaluate performance metrics for developers, ensuring productivity and quality targets are met.
• Line manage a section of the engineering department, driving personal development and performance management for direct reports.
• Support recruitment processes and drive retention initiatives for high-performing team members.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement within engineering teams, identifying and implementing best practices.
• Actively promote a high-trust, high-collaboration engineering culture with excellent communication.
• Champion and model company values, acting as a role model for team members.

Requirements

• Significant experience in a SaaS environment of rapid and efficient software development with clean code, SOLID principles and design patterns, and building this competency in teams.
• Experience monitoring engineering performance and driving continuous improvement.
• Strong general aptitude for programming and problem solving, with ability to pick up new tools and techniques quickly.
• Significant previous experience as a hands-on software engineer working with mature DevOps practices, maintaining skills to get down into the code when required.
• Strong understanding of creating and operating maintainable systems, including automated testing, quality assurance, scalability, and security best practices.
• Experience leading engineering teams building complex/distributed systems.
• Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
