Principal Software Engineer (AI)

TL;DR

Principal Software Engineer (AI): Responsible for driving user acquisition, engagement, and retention for Microsoft Edge by building and optimizing data, experimentation, feedback, and insights systems. Focus on AI-driven capabilities, intelligent experimentation, and delivering impactful user experiences.

Location: Must live within a 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific Microsoft office location in China and work from the office at least four days per week

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable systems for growth experimentation, feedback loops, and data-driven insights.
• Build reusable components and architecture to support long-term sustainability and rapid iteration.
• Collaborate with Data Science teams to operationalize AI-first engineering solutions, including advanced AI solution powered insights and personalization systems.
• Implement intelligent experimentation frameworks to optimize user journeys and product features.
• Develop and refine KPIs dashboards, churn analysis systems, and attribution models to measure success and guide decisions.
• Ensure high-quality telemetry and experimentation infrastructure for global scale.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
• Solid understanding of experimentation frameworks and data analytics.

Nice to have

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
• Experience with distributed systems, data pipelines, and cloud services (Azure).
• Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and tools (Copilot, Spark, Kafka).
• Ability to work in fast-paced, mission-driven environments with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication skills and a growth mindset.
