Lead Counsel, Product And IP (AI)

Location: United States eligibility implied by the requirement for active membership in at least one U.S. state bar; California is preferred.

Salary: $227,200–$284,000 USD annually, plus potential equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead IP strategy across the full product lifecycle, from conception through commercialization.
• Advise on product development, regulatory matters, user terms, and risk management.
• Partner with Research, Product, Engineering, Operations, Communications, and Marketing on IP risks, data licensing, and open-source governance.
• Support Scale's worldwide patent and trademark portfolio, including prosecution, registration, and enforcement.
• Advise on third-party, synthetic, and open-source data and models, and draft or negotiate IP provisions in commercial agreements.
• Develop and deliver training on intellectual property and data licensing.

Requirements

• 5+ years of intellectual property law experience at a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department.
• JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar in good standing; California admission is preferred.
• Experience providing practical product counsel in a high-growth technology environment.
• Strong strategic thinking, risk calibration, organization, and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate with executive, business, legal, and technical audiences in a fast-paced environment.
• Deep interest in artificial intelligence, generative AI, and machine learning, with sufficient technical fluency to engage with engineering and product teams.
