In-House Patent Counsel (AI)

Location: Bloomington, Illinois, United States; hybrid role with the majority of time required in the office

Salary: $137,000–$200,000 per year, plus potential annual incentive pay of up to 30% of base salary

What you will do

• Draft and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO and manage patent portfolios with outside counsel.
• Partner with IT, R&D, Claims, inventors, and business leaders to identify inventions and align IP strategy with business goals.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity analyses to guide product development and mitigate IP risks.
• Draft, review, and negotiate IP provisions in commercial agreements, technology licenses, joint development agreements, and vendor contracts.
• Support patent disputes, including outside counsel coordination, legal opinions, discovery, and motion practice.
• Train inventors and leadership on invention harvesting, trade secret protection, and IP best practices.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and strong academic credentials.
• USPTO patent bar registration and an active law license in at least one state.
• At least 3 years of patent law experience, including top-tier law firm and/or in-house corporate legal department experience.
• Technical fluency in software architecture, cloud services, AI/ML, data security, mobile applications, fintech/insuretech, open-source software, large language models, telematics, databases, and data pipelines.
• Experience drafting and prosecuting complex software patent applications, preparing patent opinions, handling patent litigation, and negotiating IP-related contracts.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. immediately; visa sponsorship is not available. Candidates not licensed in Illinois must pursue an in-house limited license through the Illinois Board of Admissions.
