Senior/Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Foster City, CA; Seattle, WA; or San Diego, CA. Workplace: Hybrid

Base salary: $230,000–$315,000 per year. Additional compensation may include Amazon RSUs, Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, and a sign-on bonus.

Zoox is developing a fully autonomous vehicle fleet and the supporting mobility ecosystem for urban transportation.

What you will do

• Design and build scalable, efficient, and resilient backend systems for a production-grade robotaxi ride-hailing service.
• Develop and operate cloud services and APIs for dispatch, routing, payments, mobile access, telemetry processing, and service metrics.
• Own core functionality including payments, fleet dispatch, and service management.
• Contribute to technical roadmaps and development plans, and execute them effectively.
• Apply engineering best practices through design reviews, code reviews, testing, and documentation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of cloud software engineering experience.
• Extensive experience designing, implementing, and operating backend microservices.
• Experience running and optimizing production-grade systems for efficiency and resilience.
• Proficiency with Kotlin or Java, REST APIs, and SQL.
• Experience operating production services with cloud infrastructure such as Kubernetes and Docker.

Nice to have

• Experience with Spring Boot microservice architectures, PostgreSQL, or Elasticsearch.
• Background in transportation, robotics, logistics, or autonomous vehicles.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and Kafka.
