Sr. Staff Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Remote within the United States; candidates must be eligible to work in the US for full-time employment.

Salary: $160,000–$190,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, debug, and maintain scalable, highly available, fault-tolerant production applications in Java and Kotlin.
• Lead architecture discussions, code and design reviews, technical planning, roadmap influence, and ownership of new projects.
• Build data pipelines that transform incoming data into Kafka streams and Key Life Indicators, integrate with MANTL APIs, and tune Kafka and system performance.
• Develop backend-driven frontend features in Vue.js, modernize legacy applications, and improve service automation and operability.
• Configure environments, monitor system health with Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry, and respond to on-call incidents one week per month.
• Mentor developers, lead sprint planning, collaborate with product owners, designers, customers, and business stakeholders, and establish engineering standards.

Requirements

• At least 12 years of related software development experience, or 8 years with an advanced degree.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Exceptional Java or Kotlin programming skills and experience as a backend-leaning full-stack developer.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot, Hibernate, RESTful APIs, Kafka streaming and performance tuning, and SQL database querying.
• Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for frontend development.
• Advanced experience with cloud-native infrastructure, AWS, Kubernetes, microservices architecture, API-first development, and OpenTelemetry.
• Understanding of the full software development lifecycle, from design and development through deployment.
• Experience leading complex technical projects across multiple teams, collaborating in an agile framework, and delivering cross-organization impact independently.
• Strong analytical, time management, written, verbal, and technical communication skills; willingness to participate in a one-week-per-month on-call rotation.
• Experience driving AI-assisted engineering strategies, developer workflow optimization, modernization initiatives, and prompt and context engineering standards.
