Staff Software Engineer, Controls (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; the role is associated with an office-based position.

Salary: $190,000–$230,000 USD annual base salary for the SF/Silicon Valley location. Total compensation also includes equity, bonuses, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and implement feedback, control, and actuation strategies using established and novel techniques.
• Architect, develop, and test reliable, redundant, safety-critical software controlling fully loaded autonomous trucks.
• Characterize steering, braking, throttle, engine management, and vehicle dynamics to create models for motion planning, simulation, and controls.
• Develop solutions for redundant actuation, degraded operation, and fail-safe control.
• Collaborate with hardware, motion planning, and systems engineering teams on requirements, test plans, documentation, and testing across integration levels.

Requirements

• Strong background in robotics, controls, optimization, and mathematics, supported by an MS, PhD, or equivalent experience.
• Experience developing, testing, and tuning controllers for mobile autonomous robots, ideally trucks, cars, or flying vehicles.
• Experience with system identification, modeling, simulation, or characterization of systems with complex dynamics.
• Strong theoretical and practical experience in controls, system modeling, and/or redundant architectures, with a focus on end-to-end vehicle safety.
• Production-level software development experience in C or C++.
• Eligibility for sensitive roles may depend on residence, U.S. person status, citizenship status, and export-control requirements.

Nice to have

• Safety-critical software experience in automotive, aerospace, medical, or related domains.
• Low-level driver development and hardware interfacing with CAN or Ethernet.
• Efficient embedded software development for resource-constrained systems with a real-time operating system.
• Formal verification, requirements writing, and systems engineering experience.
• Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar feedback-system simulation and analysis tools.
