TL;DR
Principal Software Engineer (Aerospace/Embedded Systems): Developing and testing embedded software for unmanned aircraft, payloads, sensors, processors, and robotic systems with an accent on full life-cycle development, flight-test integration, and software performance. Focus on designing multi-threaded and real-time systems, developing Linux/ARM drivers, integrating hardware protocols, and transitioning software to production and certification.

Location: Moorpark, California, United States; onsite office and R&D work required. Periodic travel within the continental United States may be required.

Salary: $147,000–$224,250 per year

What you will do

  • Lead the development and testing of embedded software for unmanned aircraft, payloads, sensors, processors, software-defined radios, and robotic systems.
  • Design software for prototypes and production products while maintaining configuration control and software quality.
  • Lead system requirements, test plans, diagnostic tools, validation testing, and proof-of-concept demonstrations.
  • Support hardware selection and estimate processing, memory, storage, development effort, timelines, and scope.
  • Transition development software to production and certification while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, flight-test environments, troubleshooting, and analysis of complex system issues.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required. The position requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled information and the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace, mechanical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 12–15 years of relevant experience with embedded software development and system troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in Python, C, C++11, C++ STL, and/or OpenCL, with experience using IDEs and defect-tracking tools.
  • Experience with RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB, object-oriented programming, multi-threaded design, and automated build, test, and deployment environments.
  • Ability to work in office, R&D, and field-test environments, including occasional irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and travel.

Nice to have

  • Experience with STM32 processors, RTOS platforms such as FreeRTOS or µC/OS, Video4Linux, Embedded Linux, and Linux/ARM driver development.
  • Experience with Test Driven Development, unit testing, source control, and tools such as GitLab, Bitbucket, SVN, or JIRA.
  • Familiarity with Robot Operating System, electronics, laboratory equipment, and advanced engineering education.
