Senior Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Gaithersburg, MD, United States; hybrid workplace

Annual base salary: $101,400–$154,650, with potential discretionary or non-discretionary bonuses.

What you will do

• Design, develop, integrate, test, enhance, and provide life-cycle support for external-facing client, web, and server-side software products.
• Design UI, architecture, database structures, instrument controls, object hierarchies, and system behaviors with appropriate abstractions and modularity.
• Extend existing systems with new capabilities and troubleshoot issues through verification, debugging, and unit testing.
• Participate in peer reviews of code and designs and communicate technical solutions.
• Develop standard operating procedures when needed and lead development sprints for software modules when required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required; additional years of experience may substitute for the degree.
• A minimum of three years of experience in a software engineering environment is desired.
• Strong knowledge of software development life-cycle processes and practices, Agile sprint/Scrum processes, and supporting tools.
• Strong experience with Java, relational databases, and web technologies; JavaFX, SQL, JavaScript, React or Angular, HTML, and CSS are desired.
• Knowledge of build tools, automated build systems, and installation software such as Jenkins, TeamCity, or CodeBuild is desired.
• Experience developing and operating in a cloud environment such as AWS, Azure, or GCP is desired.
• Ability to understand large software codebases, identify areas for improvement, and decompose complex problems into simplified steps with suitable abstractions and modularity.
• Ability to organize personal and team work, adapt priorities, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and work independently while taking and giving direction in a senior team role.
• Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, planning, and time-management skills are required.
