Senior Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States; 3 days per week in the Lowell office is required. Local candidates are highly preferred.

Salary: $150,500–$214,500 base pay per year, with possible performance-based bonus and restricted stock unit awards.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable Java web applications, platform services, REST APIs, microservices, and enterprise SaaS capabilities.
• Build full-stack components with Java, Spring Boot, React, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, SQL, and Hibernate/JPA.
• Integrate LLMs and build RAG, semantic search, prompt orchestration, intelligent workflow automation, and AI agents using secure enterprise practices.
• Design and maintain highly available platform infrastructure while improving architecture, performance, scalability, observability, security, and operational efficiency.
• Investigate complex production issues across applications, databases, cloud infrastructure, and third-party integrations; perform root-cause analysis and code reviews.
• Collaborate with Product Management, UX, QA, DevOps, Security, and engineering teams while mentoring colleagues and championing engineering excellence.

Requirements

• BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of hands-on experience developing enterprise Java-based web applications.
• Strong experience with Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, Hibernate/JPA, React, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, REST APIs, microservices, SQL, and MVC architecture.
• Strong SQL experience with stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, and query optimization.
• Experience in Agile software development environments, TDD, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and software quality practices.
• Experience integrating LLMs into enterprise applications using OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or similar platforms.
• Experience with RAG, vector databases, embeddings, prompt engineering, MCP, tool calling, and AI orchestration frameworks.
• Understanding of responsible AI, prompt security, data privacy, AI governance, and AI evaluation methodologies.
• Excellent analytical, debugging, troubleshooting, communication, and delivery skills, with a record of delivering scalable software solutions on time.

Nice to have

• Experience with private and public cloud deployments, infrastructure automation, platform tooling, AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, OpenShift, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or GitLab CI.
• Experience with monitoring and observability platforms including Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, Splunk, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience automating operational processes with Bash, Python, PowerShell, APIs, and infrastructure automation tools.
• Experience troubleshooting distributed systems and optimizing application performance, scalability, reliability, security, and operational excellence.
