Design Engineer (US)

Location: Hybrid, based out of hubs in San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, New York City, Seattle, or London

Salary: $143K–$234K base compensation in San Francisco/New York; $129K–$211K in other US locations, plus equity.

What you will do

• Own, maintain, and improve the Writer Design System for human designers, engineers, and AI coding agents.
• Design and build production-quality UI components and product surfaces from concept through release.
• Develop polish passes, micro-interactions, animation, and brand moments that improve product quality.
• Architect new primitives and maintain synchronized documentation, examples, Figma assets, Markdown skills, and Storybook libraries.
• Uphold front-end standards for accessibility, motion, consistency, and quality.
• Partner with designers, PMs, and engineering leads to improve design-system adoption and design-to-code workflows.

Requirements

• 4–8+ years building production frontends with TypeScript and React, including end-to-end ownership of a system, platform, or product surface.
• Strong understanding of animation principles including easing curves, choreography, anticipation, follow-through, interruptibility, and perceived performance.
• Expert Figma proficiency with auto-layout, variants, variables, and Code Connect.
• Proficiency with Framer Motion, GSAP, and Lottie for web-based animation.
• Portfolio, side projects, GitHub, or production work demonstrating systems-level design engineering and not only feature work.
• Experience driving adoption of a design system or shared platform across an engineering organization and influencing technical or design direction beyond the immediate team.
• Experience with AI product surfaces such as tool-call UIs, streaming responses, agent state, and dynamic UI rendering.
• Ability to navigate ambiguous cross-team problems with sound judgment and commitment to WRITER's Connect, Challenge, and Own values.
