Instrumentation Engineer/Technologist

Location: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada; onsite at the Medicine Hat Complex

What you will do

• Plan and execute instrumentation and control system projects from scope development and cost estimating through procurement, construction support, commissioning, start-up, closeout, and handover.
• Prepare and review instrument specifications, data sheets, control narratives, loop drawings, logic diagrams, cause-and-effect documentation, and other project deliverables.
• Select and size instrumentation and associated equipment; review vendor proposals, drawings, calculations, and technical documentation.
• Ensure designs comply with legislation, codes, standards, site practices, and CF engineering requirements; implement changes through the Management of Change process.
• Participate in PHA, HAZOP, LOPA, and other risk reviews, and provide field support for installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance verification.
• Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Construction, Procurement, contractors, and other stakeholders; complete accurate maintenance handover packages and project records.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation, Control Systems, or a related engineering discipline, with eligibility for APEGA registration or a current P.Eng. designation; or a diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology or a related discipline, with eligibility for ASET registration or a current P.Tech. designation.
• Relevant engineering or production experience in an industrial plant or continuous-process environment.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, solve complex technical problems, and make sound decisions within the limits of professional knowledge and authority.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and operational teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with industrial instrumentation and control systems, including DCS, SIS, PLCs, alarm management, process control strategies, field devices, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience in a chemical, fertilizer, petrochemical, oil and gas, or other continuous-process facility.
• Knowledge of functional safety principles and applicable instrumentation and electrical codes and standards.
• Experience with project estimating, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and start-up.
