Engineering Manager, Software Engineering (Java Backend)

Location: Remote (US); must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, now or in the future. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Salary: $120,000–$170,000 per year.

What you will do

• Lead and support engineers developing and maintaining Java backend applications and services.
• Guide architecture, technical design, code reviews, troubleshooting, and hands-on development using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Manage engineers through 1:1s, coaching, performance feedback, professional development, career growth, hiring, and onboarding.
• Collaborate with engineers, architects, product managers, program leadership, and customer technical teams to set priorities and deliver program-aligned solutions.
• Establish engineering practices covering automated testing, maintainable code, Agile delivery, technical estimation, and continuous improvement.
• Identify risks, dependencies, blockers, and improvement opportunities while balancing technical delivery with team development and performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of relevant software engineering experience; relevant professional experience may substitute for education.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience, including significant hands-on Java backend development.
• 5+ years of experience with Spring and Spring Boot in production backend applications.
• 5+ years of experience designing, developing, or integrating RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Experience leading software engineers through technical delivery, mentorship, coaching, or formal people management, including performance feedback, professional development, and team-priority management.
• Strong foundation in Java, Spring Boot, backend architecture, object-oriented programming, and API design, with recent hands-on engineering experience reviewing code, contributing to technical designs, and troubleshooting complex backend systems.
• Experience with relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL, SQL, and ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA.
• Experience across the software lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Experience in Agile environments and cross-functional collaboration, with the ability to balance technical leadership, engineering delivery, team development, and communication with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Active, VA-adjudicated Public Trust.
• Previous experience as an Engineering Manager, Technical Lead, Engineering Lead, or Staff Software Engineer with team leadership responsibilities.
• Direct engineering management experience, including performance reviews, coaching, and career development.
• Experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications or transitioning monoliths into microservices.
• Experience with Java 17+, modern Spring Boot, event-driven architecture, Kafka, Redis, distributed systems, reactive programming, or Spring WebFlux.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience supporting federal government programs, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.
• Experience balancing hands-on technical contributions with formal engineering management and leading distributed or fully remote teams.
