Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Spring)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid with onsite work 3 days per week

Annual base salary: $168,000–$190,000, plus bonus eligibility

What you will do

• Own design reviews, code reviews, test strategy, and production readiness.
• Design and build small, composable, resilient backend systems that can evolve with product requirements.
• Define REST APIs, events, service boundaries, and integrations for partners and downstream systems.
• Improve performance, reliability, observability, logging, metrics, tracing, and production debugging.
• Collaborate with product, data, and engineering partners to shape solutions and resolve technical tradeoffs.
• Use AI agents for prototyping, scaffolding, and refactoring, then validate and harden the resulting code.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience building and shipping production software, including deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
• Strong REST API design skills covering service contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility.
• Experience designing and evolving distributed systems, including service decomposition and inter-service communication.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL data modeling and persistence, including indexing and query performance.
• Experience with event-driven architecture using Kafka, SQS, or similar technologies, including event reliability considerations.
• Strong observability skills covering logging, metrics, tracing, and production-system debugging.
• Experience with unit, integration, and contract testing, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.
• Ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs to stakeholders and translate product vision into technical direction.
• Hands-on experience with Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent AI-augmented IDEs, with sound judgment about AI-generated code quality and limitations.
