Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Spring Boot)

Location: New York, NY, United States; hybrid with onsite work 3 days per week

Annual base salary: $158,080–$178,880, plus bonus eligibility and additional benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, and evolve scalable, modular, and resilient backend systems for MoneyLion’s product and marketplace experiences.
• Create dependable REST APIs, events, service boundaries, and partner integrations supporting experimentation, analytics, and downstream systems.
• Maintain production quality through design and code reviews, testing, observability, reliability, and operational readiness.
• Improve performance, maintainability, monitoring, and resilience across critical services and workflows.
• Collaborate with Product, Analytics, and Engineering teams to shape solutions and deliver reliably.
• Use AI tools for prototyping, scaffolding, refactoring, and exploration while validating outputs with engineering judgment.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production applications.
• Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, including production-grade service development and operation.
• Strong knowledge of REST API design, service contracts, backward compatibility, microservices, distributed systems, service decomposition, and inter-service communication.
• Experience with data modeling and persistence, including SQL and NoSQL tradeoffs, indexing, and query performance.
• Experience with asynchronous and event-driven architectures such as Kafka or SQS, including event design and reliability.
• Strong understanding of observability, including logging, metrics, tracing, and production debugging.
• Experience with unit, integration, and contract testing strategies; familiarity with CI/CD, Docker, AWS, Kubernetes, monitoring, and modern development workflows.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and maintainable system design skills; ability to manage complex problems in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-scale consumer-facing systems or marketplace platforms.
• Familiarity with API gateways, rate limiting, service-level protections, data pipelines, event quality, and analytics instrumentation.
• Experience with Claude Code or similar AI-powered IDEs and modern AI coding models.
• Ability to evaluate AI-generated implementation approaches and tradeoffs without introducing fragile systems.
