Assistant General Counsel (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid in Chicago, IL or New York, NY; four days in-office and one day remote.

What you will do

• Serve as lead legal counsel for the consumer fintech business, advising product, marketing, growth, finance, and compliance teams on features, customer-facing content, and terms.
• Manage licensing and registrations, renewals, license maintenance, regulatory examinations, and regulator inquiries.
• Support expansion into new consumer fintech products and oversee litigation, arbitration, and regulatory matters.
• Direct outside counsel on strategy, scope, budgets, and rate discipline.
• Run recurring reviews of apps, websites, public materials, policies, procedures, and employee training.
• Build vendor oversight and AI-enabled legal operations, including intake, playbooks, self-service templates, first-pass review, matter management, and reporting.

Requirements

• JD and active bar membership in good standing.
• Approximately 7+ years of post-JD experience, combining law firm training with in-house experience.
• Substantial consumer fintech experience, ideally including earned wage access, bank partnerships, and credit products.
• Working knowledge of TILA and Regulation Z, EFTA and Regulation E, FCRA, the Military Lending Act, TCPA, UDAAP, GLBA, and state licensing and registration regimes.
• Experience managing licensing, regulatory examinations and inquiries, litigation, and arbitration at the state or federal level, including directing outside counsel.
• Legal operations experience and genuine AI fluency, including building or being ready to build playbooks, self-service templates, structured intake, and AI-assisted review.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

• Experience with data privacy, vendor oversight programs, or government affairs.
