Principal Software Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Own the platform’s technical direction, frontend architecture, delivery, and key cross-product design decisions.
• Lead architecture across frontend, backend, integrations, and infrastructure while setting standards for code, design, reviews, and technical decisions.
• Design backend-for-frontend services covering API contracts, authentication, role-based access, and background processing.
• Build extensible evaluation workflows, partner integrations, and components spanning multiple services and modules.
• Improve reliability and performance for hundreds of concurrent users, resolve complex distributed-system issues, and maintain operational and analytical data models.
• Partner with engineering teams, evaluation teams, data scientists, end users, and external technology resources to define solutions, recommendations, and technical plans.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 7 years building large web applications on the frontend.
• BS in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• Expertise in React 18+, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript, including production frontend architecture.
• Deep knowledge of scalable frontend architecture, routing and data loading, server-state management, performance, component libraries, and design systems.
• Working knowledge of Node.js backends, ideally NestJS, REST API design, backend-for-frontend patterns, OIDC, session-based authentication, and role-based access.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, data modelling, performance tuning, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
• Expertise in test-driven development and CI/CD, with hands-on use of Vitest or Jest, Testing Library, Playwright, and CI quality gates.
• Practical knowledge of Vite, Yarn, Docker, nginx, AWS infrastructure as code, and GitHub Actions.
• Hands-on experience with modern AI tools such as Claude or Codex; ability to make durable architectural decisions, drive delivery from problem definition through deployment, and lead Agile or Kanban work across teams.
• Strong communication, presentation, planning, prioritisation, change-management, and technical leadership skills.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with LLM evaluation concepts, including rubric-based metrics, LLM-as-a-judge, inter-rater agreement, and adjudication.
• Experience building internal platforms or developer-facing tooling.
• Knowledge of observability practices, including metrics, logs, alerts, and real-user monitoring.
• Experience with streaming UIs, server-sent events, and data-heavy dashboards.
• Working knowledge of specification-driven development and agentic, AI-driven development workflows.
