Senior Software Engineer (Backend) (Fraud)

Location: Hybrid/Remote working policy; listed locations are South Africa, Bulgaria, Poland, and Spain.

Salary: EUR 70,000–110,000; Bulgaria: €70,000–€110,000; Spain: €85,000–€110,000; Poland: PLN 250,000–480,000.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain secure, scalable backend services and APIs for fraud detection, risk decisioning, and controls.
• Build low-latency real-time services that approve, decline, or challenge card authorisations and payments.
• Ingest and enrich device, session, behavioural, and transaction data and integrate third-party fraud and risk providers.
• Develop risk-based controls, including limits, velocity checks, blocks, MFA, and liveness challenges.
• Deliver data pipelines, metrics, monitoring, and alerting for fraud measurement, rule tuning, and attack response.
• Collaborate with Fraud Operations, Financial Crime, Cards, Payments, Data, Product, and Engineering teams; contribute to architecture, mentoring, incident response, and reliability improvements.

Requirements

• Strong production backend engineering experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Hands-on experience with microservices and event-driven architectures, ideally using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
• Experience building low-latency, correct, idempotent, and auditable systems.
• Experience handling large volumes of event and transaction data and building data pipelines.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs and webhooks, including failures, retries, and data quality.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, containerisation, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of secure coding practices and sensitive data handling in regulated environments.
• Ownership of outcomes, clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and ability to build from scratch in a fast-moving environment.
• Use of AI tools and agentic workflows to improve delivery speed and quality.

Nice to have

• Experience with fraud detection, transaction monitoring, risk scoring, or account takeover prevention.
• Experience with rules engines or deploying ML models for real-time decisioning.
• Experience with card authorisation flows, 3DS, chargebacks, Faster Payments, SEPA, or ACH.
• Experience with stablecoins, crypto, or blockchain-based payments.
