Associate Director, Software Engineering (Engineering Enablement)

Location: Hybrid in Boston, Massachusetts, United States; FMI attendance policies apply.

Salary: $208,640–$247,760 per year at the Associate Director level; $238,000–$280,000 per year at the Director level. A discretionary annual bonus may be available, and the position qualifies for hirify.global benefits.

What you will do

• Define and execute the Engineering Enablement strategy and oversee CI/CD, source control, artifact repositories, testing, deployment, release management, observability, and developer self-service platforms.
• Establish engineering standards, reference architectures, technology guardrails, and architecture review processes covering scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, and interoperability.
• Improve SDLC tooling, requirements traceability, validation, testing, evidence generation, quality gates, stage gates, and controlled deployments in regulated environments.
• Drive DevSecOps practices including application security testing, software composition analysis, container and infrastructure scanning, secrets management, SBOM generation, threat modeling, and vulnerability remediation.
• Improve developer experience through automation, internal developer portals, AI-assisted development tools, standardized onboarding, documentation, and self-service capabilities.
• Lead and develop engineering enablement teams, build communities of practice, manage vendors and platform roadmaps, and communicate recommendations and metrics to Technology leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline and 8+ years of professional software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, or related technology experience, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
• 8+ years leading technical teams, platforms, programs, or engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams.
• 4+ years of management experience.
• Experience building, administering, or supporting modern software delivery platforms and cloud-based engineering ecosystems.
• Excellent written and oral communication, collaboration, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
• Experience in healthcare, biotechnology, diagnostics, medical devices, life sciences, or another regulated industry.
• Expertise with AWS, Azure, or GCP; infrastructure automation; containers; orchestration; and observability.
• Experience with CI/CD platforms, source control, artifact management, automated testing, release management, and developer self-service.
• Experience implementing DevSecOps and secure software development practices.
• Knowledge of distributed systems, architecture governance, reliability engineering, API and integration patterns, and technology lifecycle management.
• Experience with IEC 62304, FDA guidance, GxP, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, automated requirements traceability, validation evidence, test orchestration, or formal software delivery controls.
• Experience evaluating and responsibly enabling AI-assisted software development and engineering productivity solutions.
• Experience leading organizational change, driving adoption, and managing multiple concurrent initiatives.
