Director of Engineering (AI)

Location: Remote in the Western US, aligned with Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones; travel of approximately 10–15% to Service Centers and field operations.

What you will do

• Lead the technical direction of digital products, including service boundaries, data models, integration patterns, and platform roadmaps.
• Establish build, buy, and defer decisions; operate reliable platforms with observability, on-call processes, incident response, and cost management.
• Make AI coding agents the default across design, implementation, testing, and review, and build evaluation suites, test-generation systems, CI gates, and review standards.
• Partner with Data Science to ship predictive models and LLM features safely into clinical workflows.
• Lead, mentor, recruit, and retain engineers while improving output through tooling and automation.
• Represent Application Development with clinical, operations, finance, IT, Product, Data, and Infrastructure stakeholders.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineers through 1:1s, performance reviews, hiring, and difficult staffing decisions.
• Experience leading engineering at a startup or growth-stage company through AI-assisted development adoption, with measurable results in cycle time, release frequency, defect rate, or output at flat headcount.
• Personally built and shipped production software with AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or equivalent within the past 6 months.
• Experience designing and operating a multi-service, cloud-hosted system with a production data layer and third-party integrations.
• Experience establishing CI/CD, automated testing, code review standards, and incident response.
• Experience with HIPAA, SOC 2, or comparable controls, or a credible plan for PHI handling, audit logging, and access control.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including explaining technical tradeoffs to clinical, operational, and finance leaders.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Healthcare operations or EHR integration experience with HCHB, Epic, eCW, WellSky, FHIR, or HL7.
• Experience building AI harness layers, evaluation suites, agent skills, validation frameworks, or internal AI developer platforms.
• Experience shipping and evaluating LLM-backed features for accuracy and safety in production.
• Experience migrating products from low-code or rapid-prototyping platforms such as Retool to a durable stack.
• Experience with Go, TypeScript, SvelteKit, Kubernetes, AKS, Snowflake, Temporal, Azure, and Microsoft Entra ID.
• Experience working with data scientists and data engineers on shared platforms such as Dataiku, Snowflake, or dbt.
• Experience in a larger company’s internal product group after working at a startup.
