Director of Engineering - A&D (AI)

Location: Remote, but candidates must be based in the United States and meet the eligibility requirements for U.S. defense work.

What you will do

• Lead, hire, coach, and develop engineering teams across the career ladder.
• Guide architecture reviews, technology choices, system design, and the technical direction of Defense solutions.
• Own delivery outcomes across design, development, testing, deployment, and production operations.
• Drive CI/CD, automated testing, observability, infrastructure as code, secure-by-default design, supply-chain security, hardening, and accreditation practices.
• Promote practical AI adoption, including AI-assisted development and AI-powered capabilities such as RAG, agentic architectures, and evaluation harnesses.
• Remove cross-team blockers and partner with Product Management, Design, Architecture, senior leadership, and defense customers.

Requirements

• Significant software engineering experience operating at Principal Engineer or Architect level, including system design, cross-team architecture, and technology strategy.
• Proven experience managing and developing engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, career development, and coaching.
• Strong hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, microservices, API-first design, CI/CD, containerization, infrastructure as code, and at least one modern language such as Go, Python, Java, C#, or TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools, AI/ML integration patterns including RAG, agents, prompt engineering, and evaluation, plus a track record of driving AI adoption in engineering teams.
• Experience leading teams responsible for development, testing, deployment, and production operations.
• Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and translate business and mission needs into engineering direction.
• Must be based in the United States and able to meet eligibility requirements for U.S. defense work.
• Technically deep, comfortable with constructive debate and ambiguity, able to remove blockers, and focused on multiplying team impact.

Nice to have

• Experience delivering software to defense, government, regulated, aerospace, MRO, fleet-readiness, enterprise software, or SaaS customers.
• Experience with security accreditation, restricted or disconnected networks, controlled data, AI-powered products, MLOps, AI safety, governance, or evaluation frameworks.
• Background across front-end, back-end, platform, or application development; event-driven architectures, message brokers, and streaming platforms.
• Experience modernizing legacy systems, migrating to cloud-native architectures, or applying OWASP, threat modeling, and security tooling in CI/CD.
• Experience with organizational design, team topologies, and scaling engineering organizations.
