Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with work from the London, New York or Stockholm office.

What you will do

• Set the target architecture for a shared AI engineering platform, including decisions on agents, orchestration, and developer tooling.
• Build and ship a golden path for AI-assisted engineering with shared context, tools, and guardrails.
• Deploy agents for feature implementation, code migrations, automated review, and on-call triage.
• Run agents in sandboxed environments with audit trails and separation from member health data.
• Build compliance pipelines for regulated software, including safe releases, fast rollback, and automatically generated evidence.
• Measure engineering outcomes and solve the hardest cross-team technical problems, including challenges involving clinic devices and scan-room test rigs.

Requirements

• Experience designing and building platforms or core infrastructure used daily by other engineers, including writing a meaningful part of the code.
• Deep production experience with backend engineering and distributed systems, plus the judgement to make architecture decisions in a large existing codebase.
• AI-first engineering practice: regular use of agents for formerly manual work, with the ability to explain their benefits, failure modes, and impact on speed and quality.
• Ability to take and defend clear positions on difficult technical questions with incomplete information, and revise them when evidence changes.
• Experience influencing engineers outside the immediate team through systems built and the technical case made for them.
• Ability to work from the London, New York, or Stockholm office.

Nice to have

• Experience with durable workflow orchestration such as Temporal or Azure Durable Functions, including understanding when it is appropriate for failure-tolerant, long-running agent work.
• Experience where software meets hardware or physical operations, such as connected devices, edge computing, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
