Backend Engineer, Payments

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid work with in-person attendance at least 3 days per week

Salary: $220K–$280K plus equity

What you will do

• Own subscription payment reliability from purchase and renewal through cancellation, refunds, and entitlements.
• Build and maintain Node.js integrations with Paddle, RevenueCat, and Stripe, and lead new provider rollouts.
• Design idempotent webhook handling, provider reconciliation, safe retries, monitoring, alerting, and operational runbooks.
• Lead payment incident response and postmortems, resolve root causes, and set standards for billing code changes.
• Partner with growth, product, finance, and support on pricing, paywall experiments, and revenue reporting.
• Mentor engineers and raise backend reliability standards.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including staff-level ownership of production systems.
• Deep experience building and operating recurring subscription billing for a consumer product.
• Hands-on experience with App Store or Google Play billing, directly or through RevenueCat, plus Stripe Billing or Paddle.
• Strong backend fundamentals in Node.js and TypeScript or a comparable language, with solid relational database skills.
• Track record of improving payment reliability through fewer incidents, cleaner reconciliation, and safer migrations.
• Ability to define an independent roadmap for an area without an existing roadmap.
• Clear communication with engineering, product, and finance partners.
• Experience contributing to an AI-native development workflow, including reviewing plans and designs, creating verification loops, and shipping safely with AI-assisted tooling.
• Willingness to work in person in San Francisco at least 3 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience migrating between payment providers or consolidating several providers.
• Experience with international payments, taxes, and currencies, especially across APAC markets.
• Experience working on an app used by more than 1 million users.
• Experience building entitlement systems shared across mobile and web.
