Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in the Lowell, Massachusetts office; local candidates highly preferred.

Base salary: $133,900–$190,750 per year, with potential performance-based bonus and restricted stock unit awards.

What you will do

• Define the technical vision, architecture, modernization strategy, and governance for payroll platforms and services.
• Design and evolve scalable, resilient, secure, and maintainable distributed systems and enterprise integrations.
• Lead cross-team technical discovery, proofs of concept, architecture reviews, platform initiatives, and strategic planning.
• Contribute hands-on development to complex initiatives while improving software quality, observability, performance, security, testing, deployment, and production readiness.
• Identify and implement AI, generative AI, LLM, machine learning, and intelligent automation capabilities for payroll products and engineering workflows.
• Mentor engineers, influence hiring and career development, define operational metrics and SLOs, and lead resolution of complex production incidents.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Expert-level Java proficiency and strong experience with modern backend architecture patterns, React, TypeScript, and modern web application architectures.
• Deep understanding of microservices, event-driven systems, APIs, enterprise integration patterns, SQL, NoSQL databases, and large-scale data architectures.
• Strong expertise with cloud-native technologies and platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Proven experience leading architectural initiatives across multiple teams or product areas and implementing observability, reliability engineering, and operational excellence practices.
• Familiarity with AI technologies, generative AI, LLM platforms, AI-assisted development tools, and enterprise AI adoption strategies.
• Ability to influence technical direction, mentor engineers at all levels, and communicate and collaborate effectively with technical and executive stakeholders.

• Experience with enterprise payroll, HCM, financial, or highly regulated systems.
• Experience with AI platform integration, retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, agentic frameworks, or machine learning systems.
• Experience leading cloud modernization or large-scale platform transformation initiatives.
• Knowledge of security, compliance, privacy, and governance requirements for enterprise SaaS platforms.
• Contributions to open-source projects, technical communities, or industry conferences.
• Experience delivering measurable business impact through technology investments and fostering diverse, inclusive, high-performing engineering teams.
