Engineering Manager (SaaS)

What you will do

• Build and lead a new engineering team, partnering with People to hire and onboard engineers and creating an inclusive, high-trust environment.
• Spend approximately 40–50% of the time pairing with engineers, unblocking delivery, and contributing to technical design and implementation.
• Shape architectural principles, data ownership, system boundaries, build-versus-buy decisions, and the long-term tooling direction.
• Co-own the roadmap with a Product Manager, manage priorities and dependencies, and deliver valuable increments across customer success and billing systems.
• Improve the security, reliability, maintainability, and modernisation of business-critical platforms without disrupting live operations.
• Partner with Customer Success, Finance, Business Systems, Data, Product, Design, Engineering, and Data colleagues while measuring business outcomes such as time saved, churn reduced, revenue expanded, and cost removed.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 1–2+ years managing engineers directly or leading a team as a tech lead or engineering manager.
• Strong software engineering foundations, ideally in Java or another JVM-based language, with experience designing scalable and maintainable systems while remaining hands-on.
• Ability to coach and develop engineers, provide constructive feedback, support hiring and onboarding, and establish effective team practices.
• Experience designing API-driven or event-based systems and integrations.
• Comfort working with Agile teams, navigating ambiguity, and turning evolving requirements into reliable solutions.
• Experience leading remote-first teams and collaborating across engineering, product, and business functions.
• Pragmatic, outcome-driven, curious, and committed to customers and colleagues.

Nice to have

• Experience with CRM, customer success, or enterprise business platforms, preferably Salesforce.
• Experience with billing, payments, financially sensitive systems, legacy modernisation, or incremental migrations.
• Familiarity with data integration and synchronisation across multiple tools.
• Experience making build-versus-buy decisions and rationalising third-party tooling.
• Experience using AI tools to improve engineering productivity.
• Previous experience in SaaS, customer success, operations-heavy environments, or across multiple countries, cultures, and time zones.
