Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Fully remote within Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, or Mexico; specific listed locations include Mexico City and Bogotá.

Rate: $120,000–$140,000 USD annually as a contractor, depending on experience.

What you will do

• Lead a cross-functional delivery team of 4–5 engineers and report to the Head of Engineering.
• Create concrete growth plans, conduct effective 1:1s, develop senior engineers and tech leads, and manage underperformance through a clear process.
• Own delivery predictability by managing scope, surfacing risks early, and ensuring committed work ships on cadence.
• Address team conflict directly, protect and develop strong performers, and monitor retention risks.
• Partner with Product, Design, quality engineering, architecture, and security from estimation through release.
• Provide technical direction on system design and architectural risks while removing blockers rather than becoming a bottleneck.

Requirements

• Deep, hands-on AI adoption experience, including applying tools such as Claude, Copilot, or AI-assisted workflows to code review, ticket writing, development, documentation, planning, or debugging.
• Demonstrated experience creating career growth plans, handling difficult conversations, and managing underperformance through a structured process.
• Previous experience leading fully remote teams as a default operating model, including async decision-making and remote team practices.
• Direct and timely conflict-resolution skills across engineering and product contexts.
• Data-driven management of velocity, retention risk, individual contributor growth, and delivery outcomes.
• Technical credibility through code reviews, architectural input, debugging, or comparable hands-on engineering involvement.
• Ability to delegate, coach engineers toward decisions, and avoid becoming the access point for all requests.
• The role is not intended for a pure technical architect, process-only manager, short-term stepping stone to individual contributor work, reactive firefighter, or AI skeptic.
