Manager, Software Development (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with 2–3 days per week based in the Galway City office, Ireland.

What you will do

• Lead, hire, retain, coach, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers.
• Translate product priorities into sequenced engineering plans, track delivery, manage risks, and make trade-offs across scope, quality, and timelines.
• Coordinate cross-team dependencies and align delivery plans with Product, Architecture, SRE, and other engineering teams.
• Shape system design, API contracts, data models, and event-driven architecture for scalable, secure, and maintainable services.
• Own production health, observability, on-call practices, incident response, root-cause follow-through, SLOs, and capacity planning.
• Raise standards for code review, automated testing, security, observability, and continuous delivery, including thoughtful use of AI-assisted development tools.

Requirements

• Proven experience managing software engineers who build and operate production services, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and career development.
• Backend software engineering background and technical credibility to engage with senior engineers on architecture and design; experience with Java or another JVM language is valuable.
• Strong understanding of APIs, data modelling, event-driven architectures, scalability, consistency, reliability, and failure handling.
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD.
• Experience building and operating multi-tenant SaaS or other large-scale production services, including monitoring, incident management, reliability, and capacity planning.
• Track record of turning ambiguous problems into clear engineering plans and delivering complex initiatives while adapting to changing priorities or constraints.
• Ability to explain complex technical topics and build alignment with engineers, product managers, architects, and senior leaders across teams.
• Collaborative leadership style that supports early problem escalation, constructive challenge, and effective work across teams, locations, and time zones.
• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field can be helpful; equivalent practical experience is equally valued.

Nice to have

• Experience contributing to engineering strategy and roadmaps or leading teams through significant architectural evolution.
• Experience delivering AI and machine learning products or services using LLMs, embeddings, classification models, evaluation, guardrails, reliability, or cost management.
• Experience with contact-centre, CRM, customer-journey, intent, routing, or outcome-data platforms.
• Experience building services in regulated environments involving GDPR, SOC 2, FedRAMP, data privacy, security reviews, or regional deployment considerations.
• Experience with Kafka, DynamoDB, SQS, or Lambda.

Hiring process
