Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands; hybrid with 3 days in the office and 2 days from home. Up to 4 weeks per year may be worked from abroad.

Salary: €85,000–€110,000 per year, plus performance-based equity grants.

What you will do

• Lead a product engineering team end to end, including delivery, production performance, hiring, and people development.
• Apply architecture and product thinking to turn product demands into scalable platform capabilities across countries and insurance products.
• Run product discovery with Insurance, Operations, and Growth teams, prioritizing scope and deciding what not to build.
• Shape company-wide engineering practices with other Engineering Managers, the Staff Engineer, and the VP Engineering.
• Set a practical standard for AI adoption, evaluating tools and bringing effective ones into engineering workflows.

Requirements

• Previous real experience managing engineers, including hiring, feedback, and growing people.
• Hands-on experience designing and operating distributed systems, including maintaining systems after design and implementation.
• Ability to lead architecture discussions and review designs with sufficient technical judgment to earn the team’s trust.
• Experience shaping what gets built through product discovery, scope reduction, and decisions based on that work.
• Ownership and impact mindset, including working beyond team boundaries to achieve results.
• Practical experience using AI in your own work, with the ability to assess where it helps and where it falls short.

Nice to have

• Interest in scaling impact beyond one team and creating wider organisational impact.
• Experience building B2B products, especially in insurance or fintech.
• Experience working on products distributed across different country markets.
• Experience with TypeScript and AWS.

Hiring process

• Five conversations: Leadership, Code Review, System Design, Values Interview, and Meet the Founder.
• Code Review involves reviewing a feature with two engineers; System Design covers an architecture problem close to the company’s work.
• The outcome is provided within three days of the final round, with specific feedback either way.
