Backend Engineer (Java/Spring Boot)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid with onsite work 3 days per week

Annual base salary: $158,080–$178,880, plus bonus eligibility

What you will do

• Design and build scalable, modular, and resilient backend systems for MoneyLion product surfaces and marketplace experiences.
• Develop dependable REST APIs, service boundaries, events, and integrations supporting partners, experimentation, analytics, and downstream systems.
• Maintain production quality through design and code reviews, testing, observability, debugging, and production-readiness practices.
• Improve reliability, maintainability, performance, and operational excellence across critical services and workflows.
• Collaborate with Product, Analytics, and Engineering teams to shape solutions and deliver reliably.
• Use AI tools for prototyping, scaffolding, refactoring, and exploratory development while validating results with engineering judgment.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production applications; a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, including production-grade service development and operation.
• Strong experience with REST API design, service contracts, backward compatibility, microservices, distributed systems, service decomposition, and inter-service communication.
• Solid understanding of data modeling and persistence across SQL and NoSQL databases, including indexing, query performance, and tradeoffs.
• Experience with asynchronous and event-driven architectures such as Kafka or SQS, including event design and reliability considerations.
• Strong understanding of observability, including logging, metrics, tracing, and production debugging.
• Experience implementing unit, integration, and contract testing strategies.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, Docker, containerized services, AWS, Kubernetes, monitoring, and modern Git-based development workflows.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on clear and maintainable system design.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-scale consumer-facing systems or marketplace platforms.
• Familiarity with API gateways, rate limiting, service-level protections, data pipelines, event quality, and analytics instrumentation.
• Hands-on experience with Claude Code or similar AI-powered IDEs and modern AI coding models.
• Practical understanding of AI strengths and limitations, including using AI agents to evaluate implementation approaches and tradeoffs without creating fragile systems.
